Franchises Vs. Mom and Pops
November 26th, 2009 by admin
Opening up a sole propriety business or commonly called a mom and pop shop has its advantages since you are the only one involved with the entire decision making. You determine everything from A-Z but you are also responsible for everything that happens from A-Z. You need capitol to start the business and to run the business. You must get your name out in the community in order to increase your sales while maintaining the store front. Advertising can become very expensive eating away at your profits and still not cost effective.
Many people decide to buy into a franchise business using the name of a famous business because the community is very familiar with the name. The corporation pays for advertisement on a national level saving you the expense. Many people see the name above your business and know instantly that this is the place for them to stop. The fast food franchise business is the most popular type for anyone going into business for themselves. Many well known fast-food chains make it easy for you to own your business. The system is easy to follow since everything is done in a specific manner and the procedures are uniform in process. This is a great way to go because you will automatically have a certain amount of customers, the product is uniform, and the procedures are all the same.
You can save on your advertising expenses and often you are able to save on your supplies. Many franchise business buy their supplies from a wholesale dealer that sells in large quantity saving you the owner supply costs. You often are trained for free from the franchiser and will receive bonus money when your sales are greatly increased. You are not allowed to make changes in the product nor can you change the uniforms or the looks of the business building. You have strict codes to stick too in order to maintain the franchise. You are allowed to make some decisions as you are the owner.
Many people prefer the security they have under the umbrella of a franchise. There are other business opportunities that are franchised besides fast-food restaurants. The choice is getting very broad you may select one of these other types of business ventures:
Oil Change
Service Stations
Dollar Stores
Hobby Shops
Retail Outlets
Just to name a few of the different variety of franchise opportunities but of course you can own and operate this same business as a mom and pop shop in your own name. As you can see, there is a pretty big difference when it comes to the two. They both have their upsides and downsides. This is why it’s important to do your research before you actually go about opening one. No matter what you do in the future, make sure that you look at every part of each type of business. You’ll find that there are things you may not know about such as franchise fees, etc. If you can do this, you’ll be just fine.
