Manchester is a city in the northwest of the uk. It was granted city status in 1853 & now has a massive population of over 450,000. Manchester is the third biggest conurbation in great britain & it is also the third most popular city for foreign tourists to visit.
Manchester was the world’s first industrialised city & it was at the heart of the industrial revolution. Indeed, it was the world’s textile manufacturing centre & cotton-spinning around this time. for this reason, it was given the nickname Cottonopolis during the nineteeth century due to its many cotton mills.
Due to its impressive network of canals & nineteeth century mills, Manchester City Centre is now on a proposed list of world heritage sites. However, plenty of these mills have now been made into offices and flats.
These days, manchester remains very proud of its industrial past. despite this, it has become a busy, sophisticated city that is widely regarded as the capital of the north west.
Manchester has many activities to do, containing a few wonderful galleries & museums, which are extremely fun to explore.
These include the museum of science and industry, which tells the story of Manchester’s rich industrial heritage.
