November 27th, 2009 by admin

June 30, 2006

The Plateau area is one of the trendiest areas of Montreal, so I decided to explore it a little further after my discoveries of Old Montreal. From my hotel I hopped into the subway at Place d’Armes and took the blue train north to Sherbrooke. I enjoyed a wonderful stroll through the St-Denis neighbourhood, considered by many to be the most typical of Montreal’s neighbourhoods. Hundreds of street cafés, restaurants and funky boutiques line the street.

November 27th, 2009 by admin

Learn jazz piano without spending too much money on piano lessons. Believe it or not, you can actually learn how to play the piano even without undergoing formal schooling on this musical instrument. Although, you have to understand that the older you get, the more effortful would piano lessons be for you. Be prepared to spend some time before you can play like a professional jazz pianist.

Master Jazz Bass Lines with the Expert Help of Jazz Midi Files

November 26th, 2009 by admin

Jazz bass refers to the use of double bass or bass guitar to compose and perform extemporaneously and solos in a jazz or jazz fusion style. The tenor and sound of the double bass are discrete from that of a usual guitar. The bass guitar creates a different sound than the double bass, since bass guitars typically have a solid wood body, owing to which the sound is generated by electronic amplification of the tremor of the strings. The double bass the tone is of its hollow body. This difference in resonance is quite evident if one listens to double bass on jazz midi files.

What is Smooth Jazz

November 25th, 2009 by admin

Smooth jazz may have many derivatives but in general it gets its name due to its down tempo. This along with a layering lead that includes a melody-playing instrument, which typically consists of saxophones or guitars, over a backdrop such as programmed rhythms and various pads and/or samples. While this simply sounds like elevator music, smooth jazz also contains formats that have vocals and tracks from the work of artists like Simply Red or Luther Vandross, who are normally considered “soul” or “R&B”.

Hello From Montreal – Part 4 : Dining And A Bit Of Jazz At Modavie

November 24th, 2009 by admin

June 29, 2006

Hello from Montreal: Dining and a Bit of Jazz at Modavie

After my initial introduction to Montreal through my driving tour, my next step was to explore the city on foot. I set out on my first walk through Old Montreal (Vieux Montreal). Literally five minutes from my hotel is the Place d’Armes, one of the most historic locations of Montreal, highlighted by the impressive Basilica of Notre Dame. I strolled eastwards on rue de Notre Dame towards Place Jacques Cartier, Montreal’s main square, that is surrounded by historic buildings, featuring many restaurants, as well as by Montreal City Hall, an excquisite Second Empire architectural beauty elevated on a ridge overlooking the port area on the St. Lawrence River.

Madeleine Peyroux Tickets- Bringing the True Sound of Jazz Back!

November 23rd, 2009 by admin

Her voice has brought back the sounds of vintage jazz. In fact often times she has been compared to great artists like Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf, Bessie Smith and Patsy Cline. Her sound is special and it even sounds old and wise. Her music is not monotonous pop jingles that are easily forgotten after a few plays like those of Brittany Spears or Justin Timberlake. Her sounds are considered legendary. She takes the time and the energy to put all of her heart and soul into recording music and it shows. She has become a worldwide phenomenon, playing in clubs, concert halls and stadiums around the world. Her music is especially popular in Europe, where people long for and crave those simple seductive sounds that are nearly unheard of these days. She has most definitely made her mark on the modern music world and it would be a shame if you didn’t have the chance to see her play live in concert. Don’t miss this opportunity, get your pair of Madeleine Peyroux tickets as soon as possible and enjoy this magical show!

Drummers Of The Swing Jazz Era

November 22nd, 2009 by admin

Rock and roll artists have a tendency to think that they invented the concept of rebellion. That before their genre came along, everything was goody-two-shoes and Miss Manners. What they forget is that the music industry has always been a place of innovation a source of social uproar. Even the waltz, when it was first introduced, was considered an outrage at first because of how close couples had to get to dance to it! Yes, rock and roll artists are just following in the industry’s grand tradition of scandal, a tradition that at no time has been more prevalent than in the era of swing jazz, or swing music. In its day, swing music was the ultimate revolution, a violent break from the Charleston of the previous decade. Swing music was characterized by a strong rhythmic drive and, and the bands that played it were anchored by equally strong rhythmic sections. Such sections tended to be led by drummers whose personalities were as big as their music, and a number of the jazz drummers of swing remain legends even today.

The New Orleans Blues, the Spirit and All That Jazz

The Importance of Learning Classical & Jazz

November 20th, 2009 by admin

The average person considers music to be a singular language. It is one of the oldest vehicles of communication, capable of expressing emotion and often having a profound effect on its listeners. However, the ability to appreciate music in its multiple forms is often ignored. We agree that bilingual people have an advantage over those who only know one language. In October 2001, the Juilliard School of Music, renowned for its unparalleled classical instructors and performers, added jazz to its academic curriculum. The world’s finest music institution is only one of a growing number of supporters backing a combined education in both classical and jazz for children and young musicians.

Jazz at Your Local Honda Dealer

November 19th, 2009 by admin

Every day we’re told the world is becoming more Americanised, but that, as all the best things are from America this is no bad thing. Space travel, fast food, blues and jazz, theme parks, telephone numbers such as 0-8-0-0-F-U-N-T-I-M-E have all found their way over here. What’s wrong with using numbers on the telephone anyway, why use letters? No, for me the US of A has contributed more than enough for the time being and rather than our culture becoming further Americanised, I vote for us to become Japanised. I mean that’s where the really cool stuff comes from: computer games, Manga cartoons, toilets that shoot water towards your…well you know, that cool robot from television (not available at your Honda dealer) and the most reliable cars on the planet.

Learning the Jazz Guitar Scales – Basic How-to’s

November 19th, 2009 by admin

When learning to play jazz guitar, you’ll have to master learning the scales. Most jazz guitar players are led to believe that all they need to do is learn how to finger the scale and that’s where their learning ends. When it comes time to play solos and improvs, they get frustrated because they find it hard to just play. The real problem is not that playing an improvisation is hard or beyond their skill. The real problem is that they haven’t learned to master the scales as they thought they had.

Improvising a Song on your Jazz Guitar

November 17th, 2009 by admin

1) Know the genre you want to learn for improvisation.

One of the best ways to find out the genre that appeals to you is by listening to a few styles (i.e. jazz, blues, rock, folk, country, pop, etc.). The ones that stick in your mind are the ones to start off with. Like with anything you learn, learning becomes easier when you’re interested in it. As you listen to the various styles, one thing to keep in mind is that the blues genre relates to most all the other genres. For that reason, if you learn to improvise in the blues genre, it will ultimately end up helping you improvise across all the genres.
