Experience The Thrill Of Dancing Salsa

November 18th, 2009 by admin

The Spanish term we use today to define this form of dancing, salsa, was first adopted in the 1970s and together with this name the cultural and linguistic barriers to adoption of this Latin dance were reduced. Salsa music first appeared in the 1960s as a rhythmic fusion, birthed in the cultural melting pot of New York City. In the beginning, before we had written language to record things, the purpose of dance was often to tell stories and to pass them down to future generations. Salsa developed as an independent genre in the 70s although the music was already played and danced to for a few decades.

The Belly Dance Certification Question

November 15th, 2009 by admin

Many years ago when I was just starting out in belly dance, I can remember certain dancers telling me to get out of belly dance because I wasn’t any good. You have to wonder why dancers who themselves have goals and aspirations would want to diminish mine. But the reality of our dance world can be shocking to a novice and a cautious endeavor to a veteran. Unfortunately this is our world but only a small part of it. As time went on I kept on practicing and training with dancers who I felt were exceptional. And 24 years later I’m still belly dancing and creating a path along the way that other dancers can join along if they so choose. I remember one time a reporter asked me how I would define myself as a dancer and the only thing that came to my mind was the word “lone wolf”. Ok, yes I am romantically infatuated with wolves but in my heart this felt like the best description. Since than I tell people that I am a lone wolf in this field because I am unconventional in my way of dancing. Dancing for me is a creative expression that cannot be contained in a box. How would you define the Universe if so asked? This would be hard to do because there is so much of the Universe we haven’t seen. And I believe that there is so much of dance to be discovered. So than I ask you a question, why would you want to be certified in an art form that has to do with the creative mind which is vast and full of new and boundless discoveries? Oh I’m sure there are those dancers who would say that if you are learning a cultural dance than you should learn to dance it correctly. I’m one of them and I totally agree. Ok so I’m going to play devils advocate here; with so many dance teachers out there how do you know you are learning the correct way?

Teaching a “philosophy Way of Dance”

November 15th, 2009 by admin

TEACHING A” PHILOSOPHY” WAY OF DANCE

Through out the years of teaching I have found that philosophy is the glue that holds our Four Corner Stones of dance together. In class I try to teach my students that they must be aware of how to center themselves for their journey in our dance. I have found that when we forget who we are, the world around us affects our creativity and begins to pull us either in different directions or in a direction we didn’t intend to go. So how do we remind ourselves to stay centered? It’s a question I have thought of many times through out my travels in this dance. The best way to understand how we center ourselves is to take a look at our four corner stones and see what they each represent.

Dancing Reality Shows Are a Real Hit With the Fans!

November 15th, 2009 by admin

Dancing themed reality shows are all the rage right now, due in part to the success of “Dancing with the Stars.” ABC’s award winning “Dancing with the Stars” is based on the British reality show “Strictly Come Dancing.” The first season debuted the summer of 2005. It featured six professional ballroom dancers paired up with six celebrities. The premiere drew in 13 million viewers, which was the biggest summer debut of any American reality show. The show continued to gain viewers and reached #1 in the ratings, where it stayed until the end of the season. Usually the celebrities that are a bit more athletic in real life are able to last longer in the competition, as they are required to perform demanding dances such as the foxtrot, the quickstep, the jive, and the paso doble. Fans also love to tune in to hear the critiques of judges Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli.

Some Kerala dance forms like Kathakali is world renowned, and a dance form Koodiyattom is recognized by UNESCO as human heritage art. All Kerala dance forms and dance forms of India are based on the instructions of ‘NatyaSastra’, the science of acting, which can be attributed to Sire Bharata who lived some 20 centuries ago. He described ‘navarasangal’ or the nine emotions viz. Sringaram (Love and seduction), Roudram (Aggressive), Hasyam (Humorous), Bhayanakam (Frightening), Veeram (Courage), Karuna (Compassion), Adbhutam (Wonder) and Shantam (Peace). BELLYDANCE BURNOUT

A lot of thought has gone into this particular article regarding belly dance burn out. For most dancers who are just starting out working in restaurants and nightclubs, it is hard to fathom ever getting to a point where you find yourself sitting on the side of the bed trying to talk yourself into getting ready for another show. But it is a reality that happens and the amazing thing about it is that it isn’t like a virus that just hits you and you can get over it. It is gradual and towards the end of this emotional rollercoaster, you feel like you just can’t get it together to go out and perform for even the most appreciative audience.
